Paris-based, Venezuelan quartet Insólito UniVerso, is a project that takes inspiration from a wide range of sources, such as psychedelic folk, electronic experimentation, and traditional Latin American music, particularly through the rhythms and instruments of Venezuelan folklore. Taking all of these influences, the band constructs a unique sound, represented through their original compositions and arrangements; taking Venezuelan music to unheard realms. An inmersion into a Venezuelan landscape that’s enveloping, oneiric, and danceable!

In their own words, “We all come from different musical upbringings, but share a common ground when it comes to reconnecting with our Venezuelan roots and exploring new paths for our country’s music”. Those new paths have taken Insólito UniVerso from traditional joropo, merengue caraqueño, or tambores de San Millán styles towards the psychedelic, enlisting
The Heliocentrics’ Malcolm Catto to co-produce a record that draws on the country’s largely undiscovered history of electronic experimentation.
"La Candela del Río", a trully unique record, was released on the fantastic UK label
Olindo Records.
The project began back in 2016 when lead singer María Fernanda Ruette and bassist Raúl Monsalve got together to compose music rooted in Venezuelan traditions with the openness afforded by more contemporary styles. After an initial period of creation at cultural centre FGO Barbara in Paris, keyboardist Edgar Bonilla joins the band, bringing with him electroacoustic sounds and jazz influences. The final piece of the puzzle was the “groove driver “drummer Andrés Sequera, who joins the band the day of their first recording session at La Fugitive in Paris. Their first release “La Candela del Rio” came via London’s Olindo Records co-produced by the legend of the modern psychedelia, Malcolm Catto from The Heliocentrics. After the release of his debut album, the press praised the quality and uniqueness of their music, an unprecedented voice among the nomads sounds of the Venezuelan Diaspora.

The record shows two distinct sides; on the one hand there’s euphoric music that begs to be danced to, while on the other there’s melancholy, mystery, and devotion.
- Music is My Sanctuary
A thoughtful, unsettling and very beautiful album, La Candela del Río is as adrift and mixed-up as its homeland; for guts and ambition you have to admire such a genuenely original debut.
